Yeah, you're fucking right. Music for cows. My rural hometown has effectively driven me crazy.
But in all seriousness, here's what I've been listening to, and what you should download if you haven't (however, I understand all my friends/readers and I share such a similar taste in music/moosic that this post may exist as a perfect example of futility).
Dark Night of the Soul compilation (or however you care to classify it)
Veckatimest by Grizzly Bear - I got my hands on this a little late, but good looks to Rafik. "While You Wait for the Others" is probably my favorite track, but I will say that I prefer The Hood Internet's remix, "Two Weeks (of Hip-Hop)" more than the original.
Upper Air by Bowerbirds - a band I've seen thrice, with absolutely no regrets.
ATLiens by Outkast - this shit was put out in '96?! Some of the best production ever. Been vibin' it hard since January or so, but still hasn't expired in my book. Big shout out to my boy Sve for turning my onto to this so long ago. Read his blog.
Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Phoenix - dope electronic pop by some French kids that I ashamedly confess I checked out compliments of Pitchfork. Actually, I'm not ashamed. Pitchfork is like the sophisticated music-obsessor-friend I lack here at home.
UGK 4 Life by UGK - if only to relive those amazing rides with the Trill God
Dragonslayer by Sunset Rubdown - If only because Spencer Krugg knows how to write catchy synth lines and crazy lyrics. The opening track made me want to listen to the rest of the album immediately, several times.
Here's what you shouldn't download:
So Far Gone by Drake - "Rap for Chicks" is traditionally garbage, so why would you try to reinvent it. The track with Lykke Li is alright though.
The Greenhouse Effect mixtape by Asher Roth - goofy rap by a goofy white kid put out for seemingly the same goofy demographic and produced by an annoying DJ (DJ Drama). In other news, my manager at the pool knew him from university and affirmed that he is, in fact, a goofy white kid.
In other news:
My record player must have came with a set of shotty speakers, because I haven't been able to listen to any of my latest purchases made in Lancaster and DC without intense static. Among then, the Shaft soundtrack, "Carl Sandburg Reads the Poems of Carl Sandburg," and Gil Scott-Heron's "Reflections."
The Wu-Tang Manual didn't win the Pulitzer Prize in '95?! How the fuck else would I know what crizzie or lucci were?! It made arguably the most iconic hip-hop group completely accessible to white suburban (or rural farm-country) kids like myself. I propose time-travel to correct this travesty.

I've been loving the Phoenix album as well. The new Patrick Wolf album is also worth checking out.
